In March 2024, Tang Yao, a 2021 postgraduate student from the Civil Engineering School (supervisor: Huang Bo), published a research paper titled “Computer vision-based real-time continuous monitoring of the pose for large-span bridge cable lifting structures” in the international top journal Automation in Construction (impact factor: 10.3, CiteScore Ranking in Engineering Journals: 4/350) in the field of intelligent construction in civil engineering.

The paper carries out a brand-new exploration of the intelligent identification and dynamic monitoring method of the spatial posture of the cable-stayed system for large-span arch bridges in mountainous areas based on machine learning, aiming at the problems of high cost, low accuracy and poor timeliness of the space posture monitoring of the cable-stayed system for large-span arch bridges in mountainous areas. The paper carried out indoor experiments and field experiments for target posture recognition based on machine vision methods to clarify the coordinate association mapping law between the target end and the monitoring end in an analytical way, proposed a 6-degree-of-freedom solution method for long-distance target spatial posture, which broke through the difficult problem of space posture recognition of the cable-stayed system, and realized long-distance millimeter-level dynamic monitoring of the spatial posture of the cable-stayed system for large-span arch bridges. Through cooperation with Sichuan Road & Bridge (Group) Co., LTD, an intelligent monitoring platform for automated measurement and real-time transmission was established, resulting in the development of a first-generation product successfully used for real-time monitoring of the spatial attitude of the lifting tower of the Xining River Extra Large Bridge at a distance of 250 meters.

The paper is the latest achievement in the field of intelligent construction of large-span arch bridges by the “Smart Bridges” State Huang Danian-style Teacher Team led by Professor Zhou Jianting. It serves as proof of the Civil Engineering School’s transformation and upgrading towards digitization, informatization, and intelligence. Civil Engineering School will continue to promote the upgrading and transformation of the civil engineering profession and the establishment of new majors in intelligent construction, striving to make greater contributions to digital technology innovation, major engineering research, and the cultivation of talent in intelligent construction.
